Mt Isa Rats Custom Triathlon Training Camp
In March of this year Nick and Jess
made the trip up to North Western
Queensland to conduct a two day Custom
Camp for the Mt Isa Rats Triathlon
Club. With fifteen eager participants
on hand to take in the two days of
the camp program a busy few days was
ensured.
As with all custom camps the participants
were able to choose subject matter
relevant to themselves over the course
of the weekend, both practical and
in the class room. As the race calendar
was heading into the off season the
theme of the weekend was very much
about building into next season as
a way of planning for the events individuals
were targeting and learning about
program structure, the importance
of working to heart rate and ways
to self-test to find lactate threshold
heart rates and learn about the training
zones best suited to the various phase’s
in the training and how to pace in
races of varying distances.
A clinic on nutrition for every
day, training, recovery and racing
was very well received and drove home
the fact that many age group athletes
still struggle with planning this
important aspect of the training and
racing process. A mini triathlon with
transition skills and cycle skills
plus open water swim clinic was a
big part of the weekend as was the
general group discussions answering
many of the individual questions of
the group. In all a great few days
and great to see a number the campers
participate a few weeks later at the
Mooloolaba triathlon and then go onto
some big personal best a few weeks
later in the major race of the season
for the region – The Dirt and
Dust tri Festival at Julia Creek.
