Latest News - May 2006
It's a great time of the year on the Sunshine Coast at MSC headquarters.

The change of seasons allows the body and mind to relax a little and get that all important recovery before the gradual build up to another season.

Of course there are always events to do to keep in touch, whether it be a stand alone running, cycling, MTB, swimming or adventure race or hitting the gym or pilates studio for some strength work.

In fact many MSC athletes and friends are planning a few different things over the winter that offer a new challenge requiring different skills but still keeps the endurance building (and maintaining) happening.

Don't be afraid to try new events or take that extra time to regenerate from a long season of racing and structured training - your body and mind will be all the better off for it come the new season.

Allez Sport Athlete of the month

Our MSC / Allez Sport Athlete of the month award has been awarded to Rebecca Brown from Canberra. A recent Hawaii Ironman Qualifier from Port Macquarie (who decided to pass up the spot) Rebecca had a very strong race at Port Macquarie to finish in a time still very competitive for her age group.

Rebecca wins a $50 voucher courtesy of David Chick from Allez Sport at Mooloolaba.

A few MSC member Standouts from last season

Steve Pratt - Made IM Australia at Port Macquarie his final Ironman. A veteran of nearly 20 years Steve has reached the top of the sport at the IM discipline. Having coached him to a sub 9hr Forster (winner 35-39) a few years back and again a top 20 at IM OZ this year - (he entered pro), even though he works as a script writer, I must say he is one of the most professional and dedicated age group athletes I have worked with. Steve would have won the 40-44 age category by over 20 minutes this year so I'm sure his farewell event was a very rewarding experience. Steve tells me he is keen to stay fit with a lot of swimming and I hear some Latin dancing!

Justin Hunter - A guy who was gone from well over 11 hours for the Ironman when he came to Noosa to live a few years back after first being on an online program while living in Brisbane. A gifted runner with a big heart, Justin's swim and bike were not so strong but after many hours in the water and in the saddle over many months and now years Justin recorded a 9hr40 effort at Port Macquarie this year. Just to back that up - a few weeks ago he produced a 2hr43 marathon to win the Brisbane marathon to record another PB and win by 10 minutes!

Roger and Colleen Souter - From Sydney, both Roger and Colleen were extremely competitive in the National Series placing in their respective categories on several occasions and even by-passing their age categories in races like Noosa and Mooloolaba to race the young guns in the open age category over the Olympic distance. Always prepared to raise the bar, both experienced a gradual improvement over a 6 month period to take renewed confidence to the 2006/2007 season.

Welcome Sarah
Professional Sarah Fien has been training with us in squads and overall program for the past 6 weeks. Training currently for IM Japan on 28 May and then Hawaii, Sarah was second on the weekend past (13/5) behind Rina Hill and just in front of Belinda Grainger at the Byron Bay Olympic Distance Triathlon.

Noosa Tri Club continues events over the winter. Based from the Noosa Heads Lions Park, you can get all the latest info from the website and club race calendar - linked from the MSC site.

Sports Testing
For any local (South Easy QLD) athletes wishing to get lactate threshold / VO 2 testing on bike or run or both, I have contact details if you would like to go down this path. A great way to know for sure your HR zones and lactate threshold HR for each on land discipline. Let me know if you would like the details and we can then work these parameters into your training if you are on a program.

For interstate athletes we can assist in finding details for your closest Exercise physiology lab.

New Noosa Squad fee's from June 1

Swim squads at Noosa Aquatic Centre $6
Windtrainer $5 + $2 for hire on the day if you don't have one
Track (Run) $4
Transitions (in summer) $4

New Online Fee's have also been posted on the MSC site - although these fee's do not apply for existing MSC athletes currently on programs

Q-Daily
Graeme Brewer - the creator of Q-Daily (and keen triathlete and part time MSC squad member) featured in the Monday (yesterdays 15/5) edition of Brisbane's main daily newspaper the Courier Mail Business section on the success of the product as part of the Sunshine Coast University's Innovation Centre. The product is now being exported overseas and has a visible product line in healthfood shops across Australia. It's worth giving the product a try and if no retailer stocks it near you just go into their website - (hotlinked from MSC website) and you can find a store near you or even buy online. It really is the purest way to get your daily serve of fruits and veges if you are lacking by not eating enough fresh fruit and veges each day.

Action Tanks
A great supporter of MSC over the seasons. Action Tanks have just signed Australia's motivational guru Lawrie Lawrence as the public face of the company. You'll see Lawrie's face in the advertising and letting us all now about what a unique product Action Tanks are. The new Kids Alive tanks will be the name of the new initiative. You may have seen a recent version of Backyard Blitz installing an Action Tank in the project and talking about the child proof opening so kids can't drown in it. New homes in some states now have to have a water tank to store 'grey water' for household needs.

Cyclist Code of Conduct
Cyclists Code of Conduct promoted by the Sunshine Coast Cycling Club. The purpose of the code is to improve the safety and public image of cyclists.

Know and respect the road rules
Don't obstruct or impede traffic flow
Be responsible and predictable (hold your line, give clear signals and call obstacles when group riding)
Be patient, courteous and forgiving (things happen)
Avoid confrontation (don't use inappropriate gestures or language and don't react to abusive behaviour from other road users)
Acknowledge courteous drivers
Encourage other riders to do the right thing
Show by example
Remember - what you do effects us all
