MSC Latest News June 2006
When starting back from a rest period do it slowly and progressively - lay down a base and keep a lid on the ego for the first 8 weeks. While some athletes continue to train through the off season others have a total break which is a great chance to let mind and body rest and get back to having a few sleep ins. A good opportunity also to plan for next season and set those all important goals as well.

Coming next Month will be the release of a specific Noosa Triathlon Training program based on either 12 or 16 week training blocks that athletes - beginners to intermediate can purchase in full and save on the cost of a normal online program. Details will be on the MSC website during the second half of July.

Coral Coast Triathlon
I was in Cairns two weeks ago to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Australia's longest running Triathlon - The Coral Coast. I wasn't racing but did pick up the microphone (It's been a while) and provided the commentary for the event. I was part of a contingent of 15 'legends' who made the trip up and were looked after very well. For the record - Brad Beven won convincingly and is on the comeback trail still working towards getting back to a top level. Jo King in the females was back racing after a 2.5 year lay off and even though young Commonwealth Games team member Felicity Abram beat her to the line it was great to see Jo (former Triathlon World Champ - 1998 and talented Ironman) enthusiastic again after a nearly being lost from the sport. Some of the other former champs up there were Greg Stewart - third at Hawaii in 1987, Tim Bently - Aussie Champ of the 80's and 90's. Tim Ahearn - Aussie IM Champ at Forster in the 90's.

MSC had a few racing also with Allan Moustoukas picking up a second in the 45-49 men and Jess Fleming winning the 30-35 ladies in what was the QLD State Olympic Distance Champs for 2006 - well done team!

Life Stream Triathlon 2006
Brad Beven set to race the Mackay Life Stream Triathlon 2006

One on Queensland’s bigger regional Triathlons is set to go again in 2006. Now in it’s fourth year. The Mackay Life Stream Triathlon’s date has been set down for Saturday October 7th. Held over the sprint (500/15/4) and Masters (1000/30/8) distances for the adults and separate Juniors events for those from 7 to 14 years. Race headquarters will be at the Mackay SLSC which will also be hosting an awards dinner for sponsors this year.

North QLD legend Brad Beven has been named event ambassador for 2006 and will be a starter in the longer event. Brad recently showed his class in winning the Cairns Coral Coast Triathlon after taking out the Australian Championship at Geelong in the Men’s 35-39 category. He will be making school visits in the days leading up to the event and be on hand on race day to present awards to local juniors triathletes taking part and speak to guest at the awards dinner.

The Life Stream Foundation is a charity organisation based in Brisbane that provides critical community services to people with an intellectual disability in the area of sport and recreation. They expanded their network and opened an office in Mackay in 2003 and with support of the triathlon have raised over $20,000 to assist in providing the life changing services and enormous benefit to individuals with an intellectual disability not to mention their families or carers.

A major emphasis is being placed on community participation with corporate teams from the mining community as well as local businesses encouraged to take part. Major random draws will be on offer once again and all place getters, including age groups take home cash prizes. Overall there will be over $7,500 worth of cash and prizes to be won on the day.

An event for people with an intellectual disability will also take place to make the weekend accessible to everyone in the community. Major sponsors include the mining sector, East Point Development, and the local community. For more information contact.

Back in Action - Returning from a running injury

With the running season in full swing it is not unusual for triathletes to put special emphasis on running more so at this time of the year. Unfortunately the increase of mileage on not so ready joints and legs can bring us unstuck. Keep the following in mind when you're ready to start running again:

If a serious injury prevented you from running for more than a few weeks, start like a beginner. That is, intersperse slow running with walking, and, as weeks go by, gradually reduce the walking breaks. Run every other day for the first two weeks.

If the injured area hurts or you're limping, stop. You're doing further damage and are not ready to resume running.

Avoid downhills. If that's not possible, then just walk down the hills, since they pound the legs more than level or uphill surfaces.

Try Deep water running (DWR) to maintain your run fitness and strength without the impact. Studies have shown that 40min of DWR can = 1hr of normal running.

Be careful running with your mates. After your layoff, they're probably much fitter than you and may pull you along faster or farther than you should go.

Try to run on soft surfaces, such as dirt trails or flat, grassy fields. A treadmill works well, too; the surface is relatively easy on your legs, and if you start to hurt, you aren't miles from home. Avoid foot paths and cambered roads.

Wear your heaviest, most protective training shoes. (Make certain you aren't wearing a worn-out pair. If your shoes are shot, buy new ones.)

If you're returning from an overuse or muscle-inflammation injury (shinsplints, Achilles tendinitis or plantar fasciitis, for example), ice the trouble spot after every run.

Stretch gently but thoroughly after each run.

Troubleshoot the injury you just suffered. Why were you injured in the first place? Did you run too much? Too fast? Was it due to a change in shoes? Consult your training log for clues. Whatever caused the injury, avoid it next time.
